So I was luckily enough to preview a Wii U a couple days ago. Here are my thoughts.
The game pad controller is huge. It’s really quite substantial. My best description is an elongated Game Boy Advanced, you know, one of those purple ones? It looks just like that, except white and long with a larger screen screen. It feels similar to the Wii numchuck – crappy. I mean it feels light in a hollow way and not solid. It’s not at all dense. The screen itself, as it is a touch screen, sucks. There is no glass cover. So when you’re playing Half Life 4 on your new Wii U, and you spew your Mountain Dew all over your game pad, well, it’ll soak right in.
Now, to the Wii U itself. It’s really long. Look at the white Wii you have in your dusty attic right now and then imagine it, but 1.75 times as long. It’s nothing special. Unfortunately, the unit I was investigating did not offer any actual game play, but honestly, I think I’m not missing anything here.
The stylus isn’t bad on the screen. It’s like using a mouse on a screen, but instead of using your finger to map from a tiny rectangle to a large screen, you use your hand to do it with the stylus. Again though, it’s just too light to be effective. The screen itself is responsive enough. With the demo I was using, it’s not easy to tell if it’s on par with a smart phone class touchscreen either. I will say it’s least as responsive as my oldest Android phone.
