I keep bringing it up, but if you haven’t heard about my April Fools joke, where have you been? I allegedly “got a scholarship from Google” that essentially would give me $10,000 per year for college, free food, gas money, car money, travel money, and so on.
While the joke itself was pretty good, the genuine responses from all of my great friends was even better. Here are my favorites from Facebook.
Congrats Ryan!!! I am very proud of you. When you are famous, please remember me. :)
– Melissa V.

This one is a little out of context, but he and I go way back with a joke one of our other friends the old man.

– Manuel D.
There are more comments from after I revealed that it was a hoax!

And finally, the last from Facebook, which I think sums it up all very nicely.

I got a single hit on Twitter from Neal. It was classic.

However, I got some a few emails too that were pretty good.
You had me for a good chuck of the letter. The beta testing portion sent up the ‘question flag’.
– Brian R.
Sam’s response was the best, I think. I couldn’t tell if actually knew or not, so perhaps the joke on me.
I saw the scholarship on Facebook, thats amazing, congratulations! Although, not surprising in the least. Maybe its good you didn’t talk to [redacted], Google may not have wanted to give money to the competition! Anyways, just wanted to say that you should be proud of yourself, and make sure you know that this was a result of your own initiative and intelligence and motivation, and far less so the product of anyone else – even if they have helped you on your way. I hope to see you next year at CSE, maybe even have some of the same classes! (Maybe I could contribute to Google by solving a surface integral for you!) Keep being amazing, and listen to Google when they tell you you do amazing things – they do know everything after all!
Much Respect and Admiration, Sam
– Sam E.
Last year, I wanted to do an April Fools joke about there being a storm and having a surge essentially fry all my computers. Unfortunately, I wasn’t prepared for it and I didn’t get a chance. I wanted this year to be different and it certainly was different. I fooled loads of people. You’re going to love next year’s joke. Absolutely love it. Watch out! Read everything carefully and check all the links.
Once again, thank you all for participating in my April Fools joke, the 2011 Google Scholarship! I still giggle about it everyone once in a while.
