School has eaten so much of my blogging time. While I do have a free hour in the school day, I can’t give that up for blogging, it is given strictly to calculus homework. Nevertheless, I have plans here and else where. I am trying to study wordpress themes. I use the wonderful Hybrid framework right now with the Hybrid original
classic theme. I want to change things up and move to a different theme though. Hybrid is great and all, but I hardly understand any of its structure. There are tutorials, but I simply cannot pay for them.
Thematic on the other hand does have some tutorials. Not many, but more than Hybrid. I’m really loving the idea of beautiful typography. I used 960.gs recently and fell in love with the simplicity and elegance of that system. Both Hybrid and Thematic offer grids, but it feels like I understand Thematic better. Maybe. Plus I can find themes built off Thematic and adapt those for my needs.
I suck at designing though. I really do. I have no idea where to start and when I try to do it, I get overwhelmed quickly and promptly take a nap. And then there’s the derivative of
f(x) = 4x^4+2x^2+ln(e^3x).
Another inspiration I draw from is Daring Fireball. I read John Gruber’s blog almost everyday, much more than any other blog, I think. When I say read, I read his comment, and then half the time, follow through to what he’s commenting. I’d love to start a blog that runs like that. If I can get this theme working for this blog, I’ll consider running a simple clean cut and straight forward blog based on commentary like Daring Fireball.
During spring break, I should be able to get part of the theme done. I don’t mind if it slips into summer, just as long as I can get it done before the next school session.
